Overview of the program

The Comparative Medicine Service (CMS) at the Tufts University Health Sciences Campus (Tufts HSC) and the Tufts Medical Center, located in downtown Boston and the Tufts University Undergraduate Campus in Medford, MA, has externship opportunities for 2-3 veterinary students each summer. The position(s) will be available from Mid-May until September and will be full-time paid positions ($20/hr; 40hr/week). The length of the externship can be tailored to the individual. The responsibilities of the extern will include assisting the veterinary technicians, facility manager and supervisors, and veterinarians in the various daily activities in the animal facilities. The extern(s) will rotate through various sections of the CMS:

  • Preclinical Services including the Surgical and Interventional Research Laboratory, Rodent Breeding Services, and the Small Animal Imaging Facility
  • Veterinary Services
  • Comparative Pathology Services
  • Animal Husbandry Services

The externs are expected to participate in the daily activities of the department and may have an opportunity to become involved in specific research projects, depending on his/her interest. In addition, the externs will be required to present a seminar at the end of the externship on a topic of their choice, approved by a staff veterinarian. The externship is an excellent opportunity for 1st or 2nd year veterinary students who have an interest in or desire to gain additional experience in laboratory animal medicine and/or biomedical research. Interested individuals should email a cover letter, resume, veterinary transcripts (unofficial copy is acceptable), and have 2 letters of recommendation emailed to:
