Overview of the program | The Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) at UNC offers 2-4 week on-site clinical laboratory animal externship opportunities for veterinary students with an expressed interest in laboratory animal medicine during their clinical year(s). Externs are expected to be active participants in the experience and will participate in daily departmental activities, including but not limited to working up clinical cases with faculty, resident veterinarians and veterinary technicians as well as exposure to our enrichment program. Externs will have the opportunity to attend training classes, IACUC meetings (if scheduled concurrently), veterinary services rounds, operations meetings and resident didactic training through the Research Triangle Laboratory Animal Training Program (RTLATP). Additionally, externs will interface with operations directors, facility managers, core managers and tour UNC facilities. During the externship program, externs typically present a journal article and topic of interest to the veterinary services group. |
Other comments | Clinical externships are provided on a first come, first served basis. UNC typically only has one clinical extern at a time in order to provide a personalized experience. There is no formal application for the clinical externship program. Please contact Dr. Ilana Galex ilanag@email.unc.edu with a current CV and your dates of interest.
Additional documents required for completion of the externship will be sent to the student after dates are secured. Comparative pathology externships may also be available. Please contact Hannah Atkins hannah_atkins@med.unc.edu for more information regarding pathology opportunities.
