Overview of the program

This externship will introduce students to the field of laboratory animal medicine and provide a strong foundation in the discipline.  Using a mix of didactic and hands-on training, students will gain proficiency in the veterinary care of lab animals and apply their skills and knowledge from previous courses in their veterinary curriculum. Discussions will be challenging, requiring independent thought and application of concepts to real-world situations. Students will be expected to give a formal presentation at the end of their externship on a lab animal medicine topic of their choice.

It will also introduce students to the University of Minnesota’s residency program and allow for a deeper understanding of the program. Species that may be worked with include mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, cats, pigs, sheep, macaques, and zebrafish. Students will work with multiple ACLAM diplomates as well as residents and veterinary technicians.
