ASLAP 2025 Summer Fellowship

The Board of Directors (BOD) of the ASLAP Foundation would like to announce the availability of the Request for Application (RFA) for the 2025 Summer Fellowship program.

Please review the RFA and Review Criteria  along with thechecklist used by the BOD in the review of each proposal.  The RFA has been revised and applications should follow the revised format.

The ASLAP Foundation is incorporated in the State of Illinois and is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide awards and scholarships to veterinary students who have demonstrated an interest in the practice of laboratory animal medicine. The ASLAP Foundation summer fellowship program is intended to provide the student with a 10-12 week concentrated exposure to the practice of laboratory animal medicine that combines both didactic and experiential training. The emphasis of the training is expected to be focused in the areas of clinical laboratory animal medicine and program/facility management. The fellowship program will provide up to $5,000 to support the salary of the summer student.

The deadline for submitting applications is October 4, 2024, with awards made by November 27, 2024. For questions concerning the fellowship program contact Sally Westlake at sally.westlake@aalas.org.

2024 ASLAP Veterinary Student Award Program (VSAP)

The Veterinary Student Award Program (VSAP) provides awards (a certificate, one year’s membership in ASLAP and a copy of the 3rd edition of the ACLAM Laboratory Animal Medicine textbook, and a monetary award of $300). There will be a total of five awards presented.

The VSAP is intended to increase awareness of the practice of laboratory animal medicine by recognizing five current senior veterinary students who have demonstrated significant interest and potential in the field. Awards will be presented at the student’s respective school during their awards program or another suitable public event involving a large proportion of the student body. Past winners of the VSAP Award are not eligible.

Nominations are welcomed and encouraged from any current national ASLAP member. Completed nomination forms should be accompanied by the student’s CV and an essay written by the student of up to 500 words describing their participation in activities related to laboratory animal medicine, and how these activities have influenced their interests and career goals and whether they have applied to and/or been accepted to an ACLAM recognized training program.

About ASLAP Foundation

The mission of the ASLAP Foundation is to secure the future of our practice specialty through our involvement with and education of today's veterinary students. The ASLAP Foundation was incorporated in the State of Illinois in May of 2005 and is registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide awards and fellowships to veterinary students who have demonstrated an interest in the practice of laboratory animal medicine. Thanks to the generous support of Pfizer the Foundation is able to provide awards to deserving veterinary students from each veterinary school. Thanks to the sponsorship of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC), the Association of Primate Veterinarians (APV), Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer and GalxoSmithKline in 2011 the Foundation's fellowship program supported awards made to eight institutions supporting eleven summer fellows.

The ASLAP Foundation seeks 100% participation of the ASLAP membership. We hope that as a member of ASLAP you will make the Foundation a part of your annual giving plan. The future of our practice specialty is dependent upon attracting more veterinary students to the field and the Foundation's focused outreach effort to veterinary students gives ASLAP and its membership the opportunity to contribute to the long term success of our specialty.

The Foundation Board has established four levels of recognition for donors. For corporate donors those levels are:

  • Platinum for contributions of $10,000 and greater,
  • Gold for contributions of $5,000 and greater, ,
  • Silver for contributions of $2,500 and greater and
  • Bronze for contributions of $1,000 and greater.

For individual donations those levels are:

  • Platinum for contributing $1000 or greater,
  • Gold for contributing $500-999,
  • Silver for contributing $250-500 and
  • Bronze for contributing $100-249.

Your donation to the ASLAP Foundation will directly benefit students who are interested in pursuing laboratory animal medicine as a career. Investing in their future will ensure the future of our specialty and allow us all to rest assured that what we have built will continue in the future and be in good hands; hands belonging to laboratory animal veterinarians who were helped along as students by the ASLAP Foundation.
